394. TURNIP
The Turnip Tomato is a rare heirloom variety with an intriguing history. Originating from Italy, this indeterminate plant produces very large, deep red fruits, often weighing close to 2 pounds. The tomatoes have a big heart to blunt heart shape, with lots of meat and very little gel, making them excellent for sauces. The flavor is rich and sweet. The name “Turnip” was given by a Michigan seed collector who received the seeds from a family that had cultivated the variety for several generations. The family named it “Turnip” because the tomato’s shape reminded them of a turnip.
